Cysts and Cyst Removal

A cyst is a sac-like pocket of tissue that contains fluid, air, or other substances. They are relatively common and can grow almost anywhere under the skin on the body. Most cysts are benign, or harmless. In some cases, however, cysts can indicate an underlying malignancy (cancer), which is why it is important to have cysts evaluated by a dermatologist. At Skin and Laser Dermatology Center, the dermatologists and dermatological providers are experts and specialists in cyst evaluation and removal. For a consultation, call the office today to schedule an appointment.

What causes cysts?

Cysts are often caused by blockage in a duct, which can be due to trauma, infection, or genetic tendency.

Are cysts benign or can they be dangerous?

Most cysts are benign (harmless). However, some cysts may occur near other lesions which can themselves be malignant, or cancerous, which is why they require medical evaluation. Some individuals are genetically more likely to develop benign cysts, but in some cases, this can indicate underlying medical conditions that should be evaluated.

What do cysts look like?

Cysts can vary in appearance depending on where they are located on your body. They often appear as flesh-colored or whitish-yellow smooth-surfaced bumps under the skin.

Why does my cyst appear red and tender to the touch?

Cysts can become inflamed, which often results in their tender and red appearance. Inflamed cysts can be treated at Skin and Laser Dermatology Center in order to reduce their size and inflammation.

When should I have my cyst evaluated?

Whether or not a cyst should be evaluated depends on a number of factors, such as the type and location of the cyst. If you have noticed a new lump or if a cyst has become painful or inflamed, you should schedule an appointment at Skin and Laser Dermatology Center. Cysts that have been present for many years should also be evaluated, because benign cysts may change over time.

What are the treatment options for cysts?

In some cases, cysts can improve on their own. In other cases, medical care is required. Common methods of treatment performed by healthcare professionals include:

  • Draining fluids from the cyst to reduce their size and appearance
  • Using medications to reduce inflammation in the cyst
  • Surgically removing the cyst. If there is a suspicion that the cyst is cancerous, a tissue sample may be removed for testing.

I really appreciate the polite and professional service that Dr. Bajoghli’s practice provides in my dermatologic health. All of his staff make you feel welcome and are concerned for your care. Speaking as someone who neglected his skin care when I was young, I appreciate having a physician who is personally concerned for his patients.
