Frequently Asked Questions
Rhinophyma is a disorder of the skin that causes the nose to become enlarged, red, bumpy and bulbous. It may happen when rosacea, which is dilation of blood vessels that causes redness and flushing, is left untreated.
The cause of rhinophyma is unknown, but it affects men and those with fair skin more frequently. It can be genetic (passed down by families).
Rosacea is a chronic condition; while it can be managed, there is no permanent cure. Unfortunately, rhinophyma can’t be reversed with medications once the nose has already become enlarged and bulbous. However, the appearance may be significantly improved with laser treatments.
A state of the art Laser known as fractional resurfacing CO2 is used for treatment and eradication of rhinophyma. This is an excellent laser option and is generally very safe when performed by those with significant experience in operating these devices.
Moisturizers are given to help with the healing process, which takes a few days. It is critical that the treatment area does not receive sun exposure for the next several days following laser treatment; SPF 50 or higher is recommended. There may be mild bruising and swelling which will spontaneously resolve in a few days.
The laser treatments are generally safe and well tolerated by the majority of individuals but with any laser or any other treatment of skin conditions there is a chance of discoloration and scarring. The risk is minimized by proper patient selection and proper aftercare. At the Skin & Laser Surgery Dermatology Center we have performed these procedures since the late 1990’s and have extensive experience in treating and managing any potential albeit rare complications.
