What is the procedure for treatment?

Filler injections are minimally invasive, nonsurgical procedures. Discomfort is minimized by the numbing agent lidocaine in the filler, as well as ice. Patients who are concerned about discomfort can ask for topical numbing agents, but the very small needle we use and the expertise of our providers in injection technique works to minimize any discomfort with the treatments.

Who is JUVÉDERM Ultra XC appropriate for?

JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus XC is FDA approved for patients 21 years and older, who are interested in having more defined, voluptuous lips and smoother skin. As a non-surgical procedure, treatments are fast with little recovery time, making them appropriate for most patients at any time. If you have a history of allergies to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine, it may be best to discuss with the team at Skin and Laser Dermatology Center what the best options for your lips are.

What are possible side effects and how can they be minimized?

Most patients have very few side effects and those that they do have are quick to resolve. To minimize potential side effects like bruising, swelling, and pain, patients should avoid strenuous activities, sun exposure to the lips, and alcohol for at least 24 hours after the procedure. Patients can expect to continue normal activities including spending time with family, running errands, or gentle stretching. Patients who experience side effects can take Extra Strength Tylenol and apply ice to affected areas. There are extremely rare reports of the product inadvertently placed in the surrounding blood vessels causing skin necrosis (loss of tissue). This rare complication can be managed with the use of a compound called hyaluronidase or Vitrase (an eraser for the hyaluronic acid) amongst other treatments.
