Skin Tags Removal
Skin tags are painless, soft, harmless growths that protrude from the skin by a small stalk-like structure (peduncle). Skin tags are common in both men and women, are usually small, and are probably the most common skin bump to appear on adult skin. They are usually close in color to the flesh tone though they can sometimes be a few shades darker or lighter.
Skin tags are always benign (cannot become cancerous) but they may cause discomfort or irritation depending on their size and location. For patients who would like to discuss skin tag removal options or have a possible skin tag evaluated, call today to schedule an appointment with the trained providers at Skin and Laser Dermatology Center.
Where can I develop skin tags?
Skin tags can be located anywhere and are commonly found in areas where the skin folds like the eyelids, neck, underarms, under the breasts, and groin areas. Generally, skin tags appear where skin rubs against skin.
After what age do skin tags begin to develop?
Skin tags can develop at any age, including in babies, but are especially prone to developing after age 50.
What causes skin tags to develop?
It is not exactly clear what causes skin tags to develop but friction may play a role since they often occur in and around folds in the skin. It may have a genetic association since multiple family members may have them. Skin tags are also a common side effect of pregnancy which may be due to hormonal changes and weight gain.
Should I have my skin tags removed?
Skin tags may be benign but their appearance and location on the skin can cause discomfort, embarrassment, and annoyance. If you have a skin tag you would like to have removed for comfort or cosmetic reasons, or a skin bump you would like evaluated, contact our office and schedule a consultation today.
What treatments are there for skin tag removal?
The typical treatments for skin tag removal include cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen or surgical removal. If cryotherapy is performed, the skin tag should fall off on its own accord after treatment. If a surgical procedure is performed, the area will be anesthetized and the skin tag removed with specialized surgical scissors. The procedure our providers perform will depend on the size and location of the skin tag in order to minimize scarring, bleeding, and risk of infection. These treatments occur with minimal discomfort and can often be performed at the same time as the consultation.
