Atrophic Scar Treatment

Atrophic Scar Treatment

Atrophic scars are sunken areas in the skin that occur when the underlying supportive structures – collagen and fat – are lost. Often a result of acne, chickenpox, trauma, or many other skin conditions, these scars appear as depressions in the skin.

The key goal of atrophic scar treatment is to improve the skin’s appearance by filling in the scarred area, thereby restoring a smoother and more consistent skin surface. Here are some popular treatment options:

Dermal fillers are substances injected into the skin to fill the depressed area. They can provide immediate results, though they are typically a temporary solution and may need to be repeated over time.

Laser resurfacing is a technique that uses light energy to stimulate collagen production and promote skin healing, helping to reduce the appearance of atrophic scars. Examples of laser resurfacing include fractional and ablative CO2 laser technology, Radio frequency with micro needling, fractionated pico second technology, amongst many others all of which are available in our offices.

Micro-needling is a process where tiny needles are used to puncture the skin, triggering the body’s healing response and stimulating collagen and elastin production.

Chemical peels use a chemical solution to remove the top layer of skin, encouraging new skin growth that can help reduce the appearance of atrophic scars. Examples include TCA peel, Jessner’s pee amongst others.

FAQs

Q1: Can atrophic scars be completely removed?

A1: While treatments can significantly improve the appearance of atrophic scars, they may not be able to completely erase the scar. The goal is to reduce the scar’s prominence and improve the overall skin texture. Achieving complete clearance of the scar, although possible, is usually unlikely. It is important to have realistic expectations in the management of atrophic scars.

Q2: Is atrophic scar treatment painful?

A2: Some treatments, such as micro-needling or chemical peels, may cause discomfort. However, clinicians often use a numbing cream to minimize pain during the procedure. Other treatments, like dermal fillers, can also cause mild discomfort but are generally well-tolerated.

Q3: How long does it take to see improvements from treatments?

A3: It depends on the type of treatment and the extent of the scarring. Some treatments like dermal fillers provide immediate results, while others like laser resurfacing or micro-needling may take several weeks or months to show significant improvements.

Q4: Are there any side effects from these treatments?

A4: Possible side effects depend on the treatment and can include redness, swelling, infection, irritation, or skin discoloration. Our staff will explain these in detail before starting the treatment.

Q5: Can atrophic scars be prevented?

A5: Preventive measures primarily involve treating the underlying cause of the scars. For instance, effective acne management can help prevent atrophic scars. In case of an injury or surgical wound, proper wound care can minimize scar formation.
