Skin Laser Resurfacing
Acne and prominent scarring, deep wrinkles, enlarged oil glands, and fine lines are some of the many conditions that can be treated with laser resurfacing. Skin tightening and rejuvenation can also be accomplished with laser resurfacing. Resurfacing the skin allows more generous collagen renewal and breaks down matted scar-tissue so new skin can form underneath. This in turn improves the skin’s appearance and treats minor facial flaws. The fractional carbon dioxide (CO2) resurfacing laser (QuadraLASE or MiXto Laser) at Skin and Laser Dermatology Center is safe, reliable, and causes minimal discomfort. Patients who are looking to refresh and improve their skin texture will enjoy the expertise and experience of the skilled providers and technicians at S&L Dermatology Center.

Frequently Asked Questions
Laser resurfacing results in dramatic improvements in skin tone and texture, evens out pigmentation and reduces sunspots, and smooths lines. By removing the top layers of skin, new growth of healthy, younger looking skin is stimulated.
The fractional CO2 resurfacing laser is most often used on the face, but it can also be used on the neck, chest, arms, and hands.
- Healthy patients who wish to see skin rejuvenation or a reduction of scarring with realistic expectations are excellent candidates for laser resurfacing. Patients with inflammatory conditions may require treatment before laser resurfacing in order to achieve optimal results.
The fractional CO2 resurfacing laser delivers microscopic beams of light onto the skin in a grid pattern. The laser targets water in the skin in order to vaporize the top layers of damaged skin in the treatment area. The resulting micro-wounds stimulate collagen synthesis for younger looking skin. Fractional lasers leave small areas of untreated tissue throughout the treatment area in order to shorten recovery time and reduce the risk of side effects. Typically, new skin is visible within a week after the procedure.
The fractional CO2 Resurfacing Laser should feel minimally uncomfortable once a topical numbing cream and local anesthetic have been applied. Patients who feel anxious about the procedure may be prescribed medication to alleviate their nervousness ahead of the procedure. Once patients are numbed, the laser will be applied to the skin with treatment settings specifically tailored to the patient’s skin. After the procedure, Aquaphor will be applied and post-care instructions discussed. The treatment process usually takes about 1.5-2 hours from start to finish.
Patients can expect between a few days to a week of potential scabbing and crusting, swelling, and bruising. Patients may experience a tingling sensation for a few hours after the procedure. To alleviate these symptoms, patients are encouraged to take Extra Strength Tylenol as directed, apply cold compresses as needed, and keep their head elevated after the procedure. Many patients find that after about a week, any remaining discoloration can be covered by makeup. Patients will receive detailed instructions after their treatment.
The skin may look improved even one week after treatment, but full results will be seen 3-6 months later, as new collagen is synthesized.
