Basal cell carcinoma begins in the basal cells within the outer layer of the skin. It may look like a pearly or translucent bump, a sore that does not heal, a scaly patch, or a scar-like area. Its appearance varies, so any new, changing, bleeding, or persistently irritated spot should be evaluated by a dermatologist.
Factors that may increase the risk of basal cell carcinoma include:
- Cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight or tanning devices
- Fair skin, light eyes, or a tendency to burn easily
- A personal or family history of skin cancer
- Increasing age or a weakened immune system
- Certain inherited conditions, including nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome
Diagnosis typically involves a skin examination and biopsy. Treatment is individualized according to the tumor’s size, location, subtype, and prior treatment history. Options may include Mohs micrographic surgery, standard surgical excision, curettage and electrodesiccation, or selected nonsurgical therapies for appropriate superficial tumors.

- Is basal cell carcinoma dangerous?
Basal cell carcinoma rarely spreads to distant parts of the body, but it can grow into and damage nearby skin, cartilage, bone, and other tissue when treatment is delayed. Early evaluation generally allows for simpler treatment and the best cosmetic and medical outcome.
- What does basal cell carcinoma look like?
BCC can appear as a shiny or pearly bump, a pink or red patch, a sore that repeatedly heals and returns, an area that bleeds easily, or a pale scar-like spot. Because it can resemble benign skin changes, diagnosis requires an examination and often a biopsy.
- How is basal cell carcinoma treated?
Treatment depends on the cancer’s location, size, microscopic subtype, and whether it has been treated before. Mohs surgery is often considered for tumors in high-risk or cosmetically sensitive areas, while excision and other approaches may be appropriate in different circumstances.
- Can basal cell carcinoma come back?
A treated BCC can recur, and having one BCC increases the chance of developing another skin cancer elsewhere. Follow-up skin examinations, self-checks, protective clothing, and broad-spectrum sunscreen help support early detection and prevention.
